Energy Exercises: Qigong

The Qigong energy exercise: ‘feeling a ball of energy in your hands’ can help you to conceptualize and experience Qi. This exercise involves imagining the energy as a physical thing that you can hold between your hands and make bigger and smaller. As you become more adept at this, you may experience sensations such as tingling in your fingers as you manipulate the ball.

1. Start in the basic Qigong standing position. Raise both hands up in front of your abdomen as if you are holding an imaginary ball. Focus your attention on your abdomen and your hands. Concentrate on any sensations such as warmth that you feel in your hands. Stay in this position for 2 minutes.

2. Move your palms slowly apart and raise them as if the ball of energy you are holding is expanding. Keep your palms at shoulder level and concentrate on the ball and the feelings in your hands. Hold this position for 1 minute.

3. Now imagine that the ball of energy is shrinking and pulling your palms closer together. Slowly repeat these steps, keeping your hands level with your abdomen. Imagine that there is a similar ball of energy expanding and contracting inside your abdomen.

4. Contract the ball of energy so that it is small enough to ‘fit’ inside your abdomen. Place one hand on top of the other and press lightly against your abdomen. Imagine the ball of energy deep inside your abdomen. Take your hands away from your abdomen and shake them.
